ULKER’S ART WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN AT ART INTERNATIONAL
Ulker’s Art Workshop for Children was designed for Art International Fair at Haliç Congress Centre in September 2015.
Aims:
to design a space that would enhance children’s art workshop experience
to use recycled materials (cardboard packaging used by Ülker)
to keep construction methods cost-effective, standard and simple
Children enter the experience through the Castle Area that provides an unusual gathering and playing space. From here they are led along the Art History Tunnel with interactive Stations related to respective art history periods. Three self-contained Action Spaces are entered from the Tunnel, however, carefully placed openings provide opportunity to raise children’s curiosity and interest.
Colours and materials are kept simple and consistent: beside Ülker’s corporate red only white and grey are used. A special more playful element is provided by cardboard boxes, which, like Lego-blocks, create the Castle, the Cave, storage, seating, etc.
The project was communicated to the client and contractor through a 3D model.

ULKER‘S ART WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN AT ART INTERNATIONAL
VIDEO
Ulker’s carefully prepared art workshops for children at this year’s Art International needed a space design to enhance their experience.
From the reception space where children get equipped as artists they enter a play space with a castle that provides an unusual environment for table games as well as a large wall-painting-in-the-making. From here children are led along the Art History Tunnel with various interactive stations where they create/play/learn about a certain art period. Three more secluded spaces can be entered from the Tunnel: a Mind map Action space, Bicycle painting Action space and a Visiting Artist Workshop space. However, although these three Action spaces are divided from the Tunnel, some visual connection is provided for children walking the tunnel to arouse their curiosity and interest.
The design of the workshop space is clean and simple in order to let the content of the workshop, the interactives and the art samples to stand out. Easy legibility of the most complex of spaces, the Art Tunnel, is achieved by clear graphic punctuation of the “Stations” in red, whereas Erhan Cihangiroglu’s illustrations float along the walls freely and cover them almost completely. The opposite wall is white and awaiting children’s artistic interventions. The design of the three Action spaces speaks about their respective content: Mind map space is a large blackboard for drawing, Bicycle painting Action space exhibits children’s bicycle drawings and a Visiting Artist Workshop the artist’s work.
Colours and materials are also kept simple and consistent: apart from Ulker’s corporate red, only white and grey are used. A special more playful element is provided by cardboard boxes, which, not unlike Lego-blocks create anything from the castle, the cave, storage, seating, etc.
